World of Warcraft Professions Overview

World of Warcraft allows players to choose primary and secondary professions. While you can only choose two primary professions, you can choose as many secondary professions as you desire. Following are a list of the possible Professions:

  • Alchemy
  • Blacksmithing
  • Cooking
  • Enchanting
  • Engineering
  • First Aid
  • Fishing
  • Herbalism
  • Jewelcrafting
  • Leatherworking
  • Mining
  • Skinning
  • Tailoring

To gain a profession, you need to find an NPC who can teach it to you. However, to increase in a profession, your character must meet minimum character levels. Here is the standard:

  • Apprentice - Level 5
  • Journeyman - Level 10
  • Expert - Level 20
  • Artisan - Level 35
  • Master - Level 50

For secondary skills, you can only advance beyond the Expert level if you find a book to learn the information. Quests are required above artisan level.

Obviously, many professions work quite well together. For example, an obvious choice would be for a character to take as their primary professions Mining and Blacksmithing. Other examples include Skinning and Leatherworking, Herbalism and Alchemy, and Mining and Jewelcrafting.

It is important to note that First Aid does not require you to use one of your two primary profession slots. Therefore, it is important for any character who is going to go adventuring to learn this as a secondary skill. First Aid uses cloth bandages. Different bandages provide different healing effects. However, they also require different skill levels to work. For example, while a Heavy Linen Bandage heals 114 damage over 6 seconds and requires a skill level of 40, a Runecloth Bandage heals 1360 damage over 8 seconds and requires a skill level of 260.
